Attempt to refer Bronwyn Bishop to privileges committee fails

THE Federal Opposition failed in an attempt to refer Speaker Bronwyn Bishop to a privileges committee over a fundraiser she reportedly held in the Speaker's office on budget night.

Media reports on the weekend said the Speaker held a $50,000 fundraiser for the Liberal Party in the office earlier this month.

While the fundraiser did not trigger any need to declare it to parliament, Labor's Manager of Opposition Business Tony Burke said it brought her independence into question.

Madam Speaker allowed Mr Burke to move a motion to have the matter referred to committee, but the Abbott government quickly voted it down in the House.

The furore was the latest incident in which Labor questioned her role in the Speaker's chair.
