Attractive Volkswagen Golf wagon joins Australian range

VOLKSWAGEN'S award-winning Mk7 Golf's Australian line-up has been beefed up with the introduction of an attractive wagon version.

Built on VW's shared MQB platform the Mk7 wagon is 31cm longer than the Golf hatch, and offers 605-litres of cargo space - increasing to 1620-litres with the rear seats folded.

This dwarfs the hatchback's 380/1270-litre figures, and is up from the 505/1495-litres found in Golf's previous wagon.

The wagon's engine range mirrors the hatch's, with 1.4-litre turbo petrols in 90TSI or 103TSI guise, or a very torquey 2.0-litre turbo diesel 110TDI. Sadly, no GTi or R versions are on the cards for the big-bummed Golf model.

Unlike the hatchback Golf, the Wagons are available only with a seven-speed double-clutch auto gearbox, but help return impressive performance and economy figures across the range: 5.3 litres/100km for the 90TSI, 5.2L/100km for the 103TSI and a frugal 4.7L/100km in the diesel.

The German-built Wagon's entry-level spec includes a 14.7cm multimedia screen, Bluetooth, air-con and cruise control; a Comfortline version adds dual-zone climate control, reversing camera, parking sensors and chrome roof rails, while the range-topping Highline models add exterior chrome detailing, sportier alcantara-trimmed seats, 17-inch alloys, plusher interior details and LED ambient lighting.

Prices are competitive too, with the entry-level 90TSI selling for $25,540, topping out at $36,340 for the 110TDI Highline model.

In a market flooded by SUVs of all sizes, wagons still retain a faithful following due to their low centre-of-gravity road manners. Despite the extra weight from its longer body, the Golf wagon's dynamics and styling are on a par with its hatchback cousin, making it a superb load-lugging SUV-alternative for those who still like a true car to drive.
