Aussie eight squeak into final

AUSTRALIA'S men's eight qualified for the gold medal race after placing fourth in a tight repechage finish at Eton Dorney on Monday.

Great Britain, Canada and The Netherlands finished first second and third, with the top four going through to the gold medal race.

Britain took control of the race early and look the biggest threat to the American and German eights.

Fast-finishing Poland threatened to win a place in the top four, but the Australian octet stayed finished well to ensure a place in Wednesday's final.

Gold has been elusive for Australia in the men's eight in the past and a much-improved performance will be needed to even get into the medals.
