Aussies win extra-time thriller

THE Australian women's water polo team has clinched a dramatic 13-11 extra-time victory against Hungary in the bronze medal match.

The Australians looked like they had won the game in normal time, but a sneak attack by Hungary and an error from the Australian goalkeeper sent the game into extra-time.

However, the Australians scored two goals without reply in extra-time to make up for the heartbreak loss against the United States in the semi-finals.

The Australians took a slender 2-1 lead into the second quarter, but by half-time, had broken out to a three goal defect.

The third quarter was a tight affair, Hungary pegging the score back by one goal, but the real drama was to unfold late in the fourth quarter.

Holding a one goal lead and with barely five seconds on the clock, the Australian goalkeeper had the ball and was looking to run out the remaining time.

But a crafty Hungarian player stole the ball with a surprise attack and the game moved into extra-time.

However, the Australian team stayed strong an clinched the bronze medal after two periods of extra-time.
