Australians could eradicate Hep C

HEPATITIS C could be eliminated in 10 years if people living with the virus continue to seek treatment, a study has shown.

Thursday marked World Hepatitis Day and an analysis from the Kirby Institute at the University of NSW said since new generation hepatitis C cures were made available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme earlier this year, more than 20,000 Aussies had started treatment, compared to the 2000 to 3000 people treated annually previously.

The institute's Professor Greg Dore said this was the most rapid uptake of new treatments seen anywhere in the world.
