Awards attract quality entries
IF you’re a lover of fine art or appreciate a bit of artistic flair, come along to the official opening of Emerald Art Gallery’s 2010 Art Award exhibition.
The 2010 Art Awards includes four prize categories with two overall awards – Central Highlands Regional Council Acquisitive award and the Margaret Gibson Youth Encouragement award.
Light refreshments will be served at the opening. Cost is $10 per person with gallery members and school-aged children free.
Exhibition coordinator Lisa McNamara said there were about 70 artworks being exhibited this year, including paintings, photography, sculpture, drawing and pastels.
“This is an excellent opportunity to see original artwork by regional artists,” she said.
“This year the judge is Justin Bishop, the newly appointed exhibitions manager at Cairns Regional Gallery.
“Justin will have his work cut out, particularly as the increase in prize-money this year has made the award even more competitive.”
Local photographer, James Laws, is entering two of his photographs in the exhibition and said it was very hard to choose only two to enter.
“I keep a few photos aside throughout the year and collect them up and then pick one,” he said.
James entered a photo of a windmill he photographed in Roma during September and the other was a photo of tumbleweeds along a fence which he took out west in April earlier this year.
If you can’t make it to the opening but would like to see the work of Emerald locals, the exhibition will be on display from Monday to Friday, November 30. The gallery is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
