WITH Christmas done and dusted, it is time to set those New Year's resolutions we never seem to achieve.

But, there is hope.

Whether your goal be to burn off that Christmas day lunch plus a few more unwanted kilos, or to quit smoking, life coach at Healthcare for Healthy Minds Kath Nemeth said it was as easy as one, two, three.

"Step one: see it as it is and through realistic eyes. I think the start of a new year is a great time to look realistically at where you are now - don't make it worse or better than it really is," Ms Nemeth said.

"Step two: work out where you'd you like to be and visualise how its going to look once achieved. You have to be able to see it to really want it.

"Step three: work out how to get there. Create action plans and set tasks to achieve on a daily basis that will take you to your goal," she said.

Ms Nemeth said the key to achieving your goals was to write them down.

"Incredibly, a USA Today study showed that people who actually wrote their goals down had a 44% better chance of succeeding with them," she said.

"Whether it be writing it on the bathroom mirror or on the fridge or telling people this is what I want to achieve and this is how I'm going to do it.

"If you tell people then you don't want to let yourself down and it's about letting others help you."

She said the people who were most successful were the ones who used emotion and passion to drive their goal and the key was to mean what you say.

"When we tell ourselves something we're going to do and we don't do it, for example if you say you are going to lose 50kgs, then go and devour a chocolate cake, your brain gets confused and thinks 'hey I don't really want to lose weight' so the next time you say it, it has a little less meaning," Ms Nemeth said.

As the new year approaches, take some of Ms Nemeth's wise words into consideration and think about your resolutions.

Ms Nemeth said her five step formula will ensure 2012 is a successful one.

"Write your goals down, only have a few of them, stay conscious of them, be accountable to someone and take action every day."

The most popular New Year's resolutions are to quit smoking, lose weight and finances.

Ms Nemeth said it was also about learning from others who have achieved their goals.

"Learn from others, there will be someone else out there who has achieved what you want to achieve, so learn from them," Ms Nemeth said.

So, once the fireworks are over, lace those runners or throw out that cigarette and take baby steps towards transforming your life.

"Make 2012 count!" Ms Nemeth said.
