Backpacker "punched, kicked, robbed" in Qld attack

TWO teenagers have been charged after they allegedly assaulted and robbed a backpacker at a Cairns CBD bus stop.

The 28-year-old tourist was sitting waiting for a bus near Fogarty Park about 10.30pm last night when he was approached by a group of youths who asked him for cigarettes.

A number of the male youths then allegedly punched and kicked him before another stole his backpack.

The group fled when a number of people came to the man's aid and called police.

Officers found one of the group hiding in a building site in Florence St and a second youth was located in Sheridan St shortly afterwards.

Police and security staff also located the man's backpack with the contents intact and it was returned to him.

He sustained some minor cuts and abrasions and was treated at the scene by ambulance officers.

Two 15-year-old boys from Mooroobool and Manunda were charged with assault occasioning bodily harm whilst in company.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
