Bali holiday a blooming good prize

THANKS to the generosity of Gina Rinehart, Alpha and Jericho residents have had the chance to win some awesome prizes this year.

Kathleen and Peter Gleeson are just two of the lucky winners after they took out the Hancock Coal-sponsored Barcaldine Regional Council Garden Competition in September.

First prize was valued at about $10,000 and included an all expenses paid trip for four to Bali.

Kathleen said she was surprised to take out the top spot this year and was looking forward to taking the trip in April.

"The prize is wonderful. I don't think we deserved it, but anyway," she said with a laugh.

"I will be taking my two sisters and my daughter with me... we're going to have a wonderful time."

The Gleesons have lived in Alpha since 1966 and have always taken a keen interest in gardening.

"We have a big garden bed out the front with lots of shrubs, hedges, big trees and beautiful ornaments from all over the place," she said.

In recent years, the prize value has been just $50, so when Jericho residents Suzanne Swift and Shane Ross took home $5000 for second place they were ecstatic.

"Shane and I were just over the moon when they announced it," Suzanne said.

"I think it is amazing of Gina Rinehart and that she is thinking about the little people."

Suzanne and Shane had been contemplating entering the competition and got their entry in just on time on closing day.

"We decided this one was definitely worth entering," Suzanne said.

"It's great because the council is trying to encourage people to beautify their gardens in the community and get involved."

Suzanne and Shane can spend the money on gardening equipment and anything to add to their garden.
