Be innovative: Springborg

HEALTH Minister Lawrence Springborg has instructed his department to find innovative ways to tackle car parking issues near Nambour Hospital.

He told parliament on Thursday there was government land available in the area that could be used, possibly in a public-private partnership, and he was keen to find a cost-effective solution.

But the department must balance funding for parking with health care under a limited budget.

"We might be able to look at doing some form of trade-off in a financially acceptable way to be able to invest in new car parking facilities there," he said.

"But really ... we have to decide what amount of money we are prepared to contribute to car parking solutions around our hospitals against our acute care responsibilities and also a range of other responsibilities."

Mr Springborg, responding to a question from Nicklin MP Peter Wellington during question time, said there were 830 car parking spaces at the hospital, with about 400 in a new multi-level facility.

He said it was debatable whether a trial solution - a park-and-ride- at the Nambour showgrounds - was working but Queensland Health was still investigating a new park-and-ride facility on government-owned land at Glenbrook Dve through consultation.

"It is a matter that I am keen to address, obviously, for the people in the community, because it is a great inconvenience to be faced with ... whether you are a patient at the hospital or whether you are a staff member," he said.
