Bears teach rookie Pirates lesson

THE Clermont Bears have started the 2010 Central Highlands rugby league season on a winning note, defeating the Peak Downs Pirates 34-16.

Peak Downs coach Kurt Sullivan said it was a “new look” side for the Pirates this season, with many players playing their first game at the weekend.

“There were also a number of players who were playing their first game in a few years,” Sullivan said.

“We lost, but some good things came out of it.

“We just weren't fit enough in the end.”

He said their standout players were Rohan Roberts and Mitch Wyatt, who ran in two tries.

Grant Dorward also crossed the line for the Pirates, while Nathan Sandilands was successful with two conversions.

Try scorers for the Clermont Bears were Jacob Thurgood, Brendan Grulke, Liam Williams, Ryan Hodgkinson, Jack Wardell and Tim Bleakley, with Ben Breckon making the conversions.

The Clermont Bears could not be contacted for comment.
