Beijing to ban coal, bad news for mining industry
WITH large lay-offs in Queensland's coal industry this year as a result of a falling coal price, news that China is planning to ban coal use in Beijing by 2020 is the last thing the industry needs.
On Monday Beijing's Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau put the plan up on their website.
A statement on the Beijing Government website states that the Economic and Technological Development Zone in Yizhuang, Daxing district will be the first area with zero consumption of high-polluting fuels by the end of this year, according to a new plan for the ban on such fuels in the capital.
Fuels for use in vehicles are not included on the list of those that will be forbidden.
The agency said the city will now prioritise electricity and natural gas for heating.
China is one of Australia's largest export markets for coal.
