Big Day Out line-up announced

AMERICAN rock superstars the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Killers will headline the 2013 Big Day Out music festival for what festival co-founder Ken West has described as ''a rebuild from the ground up'', following the blighting of this year's event by cost-slashing and the departure of co-founder Vivian Lees.

The line-up for the 21st instalment of the January national music roadshow was released on the festival's website at 12.01am today and is  the first presented with the US-based festival company C3 Presents.

The 2013 event sees the return of full line-ups to Perth and Adelaide - which this year missed Kanye West because of cost-cutting - but Auckland is now cut from the tour.

Other big names among the 37 announced for next year's national tour (city-specific acts will be added later) include the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses, Foals, Animal Collective, B.o.B, Sleigh Bells and 360, as well as first-time visitors such as new buzz roots acts Alabama Shakes and Gary Clark Jr among the 20 acts new to the BDO.

More than 20 acts on the bill will drop new albums between now and  festival time, including  the Killers (with 15 million album sales), who release their fourth in September.
