Biggest day of Glenda Bell's career
GLENDA Bell enjoyed the biggest day of her four-decade long career in racing taking out the 1800 metre $75000 Mackay Cup last Saturday at Oralea Park in Mackay. Her astute judgment to buy tried horse Fastnet Flyer off New South Wales trainer Paul Murray last year has continued to reap dividends for Bell and her band of owners.
Bell paid just over $13,000 for Fastnet Flyer who had won only two races from 31 starts before joining her stables in April last year, now Fastnet Flyer has won nine races.
Fastnet Flyer atoned for his second placing in last year's Mackay Cup to the Roma trained galloper Oggie leading up to this year's Mackay Cup.
Fastnet Flyer's run in the WFA HL Black Memorial was very good and I thought whoever beat him would win. Corporate betting agencies wore the brunt of the Bell stables astute judgement with corporate bookmakers opening Fastnet Flyer on Friday night at $21 before being crunched in to $4.60 in the morning of Saturday before easing on course to $9.
Bell, 57, has been training for around 30 years while also riding the country circuit in Central Queensland with a dual trainer jockey licence.
Bell recalls one of her highlights as a jockey at 33 years of age when she won the Emerald Cup on a horse called Boucher Boy she was five months pregnant with her son Guy Bell.
Glenda only retired from racing riding in 2008 on march her last race ride she saluted on Beautiful Divka at Pioneer Park in Emerald.
Fastnet Flyer's win on Saturday boosted his prizemoney tally to just over $200,000 when he scorched home along the fence with Les (bubba) Tilley in the saddle to hold off the Jamie McConachy trained Chivadahlii by half a length.
Fastnet Flyers win ended Craiglea Deken's six race winning streak after he battled on gamely under the big weight of 61kg for third, a further three and a half lengths away.
Bell will now head to Townsville for the magnetic mile a weight-for-age Open race later this month with Fastnet Flyer. Bell is not sure if Fastnet Flyer will run out 2000 distance of the Townsville Cup on July 29.
The Townsville Cup is not out of the question and she would have to think more about it pushing on for the Townsville show piece.
