Teiko the sea lion has birthday

BIRTHDAY girls like Teiko get to do what they want on their special day.

And for this 14-year-old Australian sea lion if that included making her UnderWater World trainers blush by ignoring her donated presents, then so be it.

Teiko, who can stand on her back flippers and throw a frisby, was presented with several latex free fitness balls from Physio Supplies.

After a few encouraging words, and snacks from UnderWater World curator of mammals Brendan Nolan, Teiko made some cautious interaction with her presents.

Baby of the group, one-eyed New Zealand fur seal pup Nelson was never too far away with several timid attempts to get in on the action.

Luckily for Nelson and Teiko’s other room-mates like extrovert April and patriarch Groucho, the birthday girl is always happy to share her toys, according to Mr Nolan.

“The balls are great for environment enrichment to make life as interesting as possible for the seals,” Mr Nolan said.

The popular and gentle lady of the pool dined on pilchards and a fish birthday cake (a frozen block of ice) before getting into character for several show-stopping performances yesterday.
