Bjelke-Petersen eyes LNP run

THE son of former premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen may fight Queensland's deputy leader for his Central Queensland seat but he better be up for a battle.

John Bjelke-Petersen released a statement on Wednesday morning announcing his interest in contesting the seat of Callide, currently held by Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney.

Mr Bjelke-Petersen said he was considering seeking LNP pre-selection to run at the next state election because the current MP's priorities were "out of kilter".

"Seeney appears to be hell-bent on demolishing buildings in central Brisbane to make way for palatial new government offices while people are doing it tough on the land and drastic cuts are being made to the public sector," he said.

"Government cuts are destroying communities in Callide and right around the state, yet the Government is more concerned about looking to upgrade their offices."

Mr Seeney stayed out of the hype on Wednesday while his fellow high-ranking ministers backed him.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls said Mr Seeney was a believer in democracy who would welcome the fight.

"Mr Seeney is a great believer in democracy as am I and I'm certainly sure Mr Seeney would welcome a fight, well he would certainly be a willing participant in an electoral contest," he told reporters in Brisbane.

When asked about Mr Bjelke-Petersen's interest for pre-selection, Premier Campbell Newman replied it was "a free country."

"It's a democratic country and anyone is entitled to have a go," he said.

Mr Bjelke-Petersen ran for the seat of Nanango, his father's former electorate, in 2006 and 2009 but to no avail.

Mr Seeney has occupied the Central Queensland seat since 1988.
