Blanket bar ban for boozy 23-year-old brawler

HE ESCAPED a jail sentence but a drunken lout who got into one too many bar fights, has been banned from every pub and club in Hervey Bay.

Mathew James Nielsen's days of ending a night out with a boozy brawl and visit to the police watchhouse were brought to an end on Wednesday as he was hit with a court-ordered ban from the city's licensed venues.

The 23-year-old's troubles didn't end there as he was stripped of his driver's license for causing a crash which could have killed a mother and children.

When police arrived at the Esplanade club late last year, Nielsen and a large number of other patrons were involved in a violent argument on the footpath.

Arresting officers struggled with Nielsen for some time before they could arrest him and take him back to the station.

On another night, Nielsen had been drinking heavily when he took off in his partner's car, reversed onto the road, lost control, hit the gutter and went sideways onto a grass strip.

Police documents stated Nielsen "barely missed" an oncoming car which was being driven by a mother with two young children in the back seat.

He returned a blood alcohol reading of .115.

Nielsen pleaded guilty to drink driving, assaulting police, dangerous operation of a vehicle and public nuisance.

After reviewing the police application to ban Nielsen from licensed premises, Magistrate Graeme Tatnell made the order for 12 months.

Nielsen will be on probation for 18 months and won't be able to drive until March next year.
