Bluebottles no great worry for dogs: vet

THE appearance of stingers on some Cooloola Coast beaches has led to a few health issues for curious dogs in the area.

Senior veterinarian at Gympie District Vet Serv

ices, Dr Shannon Coyne, said this week he had been made aware of several dogs chewing on bluebottles at Rainbow/Inskip over the Christmas/new year holidays.

Only one dog had been booked in displaying symptoms but had not turned up, Dr Coyne said.

"The main concern if your dog had tried eating a bluebottle was that its throat and mouth could become swollen and the dog in intense pain," he said.

"Symptomatic treatment for these is best. Very warm water is the first aid."

Overall, the issue was not a major problem, Dr Coyne said.
