Boat extensively damaged in fire

POLICE are investigating a suspicious fire which engulfed a boat in a Gold Coast canal.

The 9m cruiser caught alight at its mooring off a private home on Kikori Cres at Runaway Bay, about 8.30pm on Thursday.

The boat smashed into several private pontoons on the canal after it broke from its mooring.

It was still alight in the centre of the canal when firefighters, who had to pull it in using ropes, arrived.

"The fire has been extinguished a short time later, and the boat was extensively damaged," a police statement said.

Scientific officers are examining the boat as part of the police investigation.
