ESSENDON CEO Xavier Campbell said the club had thoroughly investigated John Worsfold's time as coach of West Coast before appointing him to lead the Bombers for the next three seasons.

Campbell and chairman Paul Little made the official announcement yesterday, finally confirming speculation the 2006 premiership-winning coach had been given the challenge of rebuilding Essendon after its own drugs issues.

"We spoke with West Coast, we spoke with the AFL and we spoke with individuals involved in the review and the investigation at the time," Campbell said

Asked about last week's comments by former Eagles player Daniel Chick that illicit drug-taking was rife during the 2006 season, Worsfold said that was "certainly nothing that I saw happening at West Coast".
