IT'S 1845 and New York City has just formed its first police force after years of political dispute.

New recruit Timothy Wilde has joined the force reluctantly with the help of his brother Valentine, a police captain, after losing his employment, savings and half his face in a great fire.

He certainly doesn't want to be a copper star.

But when he stumbles across a young girl covered in blood who escaped from a nearby brothel, he soon finds himself on the trail of a brutal killer, a killer who seems hell-bent on fanning the flames of anti-Irish immigrant sentiment.

But his fight for justice and truth could cost him the woman he loves, his brother and his life.

I devoured The Gods of Gotham, a unique historical thriller by an author who knows what they're doing.

The characters were intriguing and complex and the historical setting portrayed very vividly.

As well, I loved the surprising plot. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, Faye took it in a completely different direction.

The Gods of Gotham is well worth a read.
