Boxes bring joy for Christmas

FOR ladies, a shoebox holds the excitement of a new pair of shoes. For children in disadvantaged communities, a shoebox holds Christmas joy they wouldn't have otherwise experienced.

With just under four months left until Christmas, Operation Christmas Child is under way.

OCC, organised by Samaritan's Purse, distributes a bit of Christmas joy worldwide through a simple shoe box filled with gifts. For regional co-ordinator Mary Anning, OCC is a chance for her to put a smile on the faces of children about the globe.

"If we get together and do one little thing, it all adds up," she said.

For those stuck on what to fill the boxes with, Mary encouraged participants to include something to wear, love and to play with along with things for school and personal hygiene.

Last year Emerald sent more than 600 boxes and Mary said she was hoping for similar numbers again this year.

"I know it has been a challenging year for Emerald and I understand if numbers are down this year but I always hope there will be an increase in boxes," she said.

Boxes are to be delivered to Harvest Life by October 30. For information call 4982 2821.
