A TODDLER who fell seven metres from a balcony of a Sunshine Coast resort has died overnight despite the desperate efforts of paramedics and hospital staff to save him.
The 16-month-old Caboolture boy had been unconscious after he fell from the top balcony of the Break Free Resort at the corner of Alexandra Parade and Pacific Terrace just after 3pm on Thursday.
Witnesses at the scene told the Daily they heard loud screams coming from the resort shortly after the incident.
Palmwoods resident Shay O’Neill, 14, who is staying at the resort over Easter with his family, was in the pool area when he saw the fall.
Shay said the boy’s family was on the balcony when he fell.
“We just saw it as it hit the ground. It was terrifying,” he said.
“The baby wasn’t moving. It was unconscious. The mother looked over the balcony and just started screaming and came down.
“She went over and picked the baby up and just repeated to herself ‘it’s my baby, it’s my baby’.
“It sort of looked like she was crying and in really bad shock.”
Shay said he felt “pretty shocked” by the incident.
The AGL Action Rescue Helicopter team was called to respond.
The Daily understands the little boy was airlifted to a Brisbane hospital.
A spokesman for the hospital said the boy was very seriously injured from the fall.
"Unfortunately the child's injuries were very severe and he died shortly after arrival," the spokesman said.
Police are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the fall.
