Boy from the bush will be back in town

EXCITEMENT is starting to build in the country music industry about this year's Optus Gympie Music Muster – Lee Kernaghan said so.

As one of Australia's biggest country music stars, Lee would know.

“I think there is unparalleled excitement about this year's Gympie Muster. It's permeated through the whole country music industry,” he said.

“There's a huge buzz among recording artists in the industry over the line-up of international and Australian artists.

“The focus is back to country music.”

Lee's Pubs, Clubs and Carparks Tour of Australia kicked off in February and the Queensland leg has been fashioned around the Gympie Muster.

He says many of the gigs were generated by requests on Facebook, which has taken the tour to some very random places.

“The whole idea of the tour was to play in towns that often miss entertainment because they don't have a venue big enough.”

The plan was to hold these concerts on the back of a truck in a carpark – hence the national tour was called Pubs, Clubs and Carparks Tour.

“We had some pretty strange requests. The wildest was to go and play in Dargo in the foothills of the Western Victorian high country.

“We were inundated with requests to go and play there so I asked my manager to book it in. He did and said ‘do you realise there are only 29 people in Dargo?'.

“About 2000 people turned up. They must have come down from the hills and out of the back blocks.”

Besides his hectic touring schedule, Lee is also presenting for the Country Music Channel on the side, profiling new and upcoming artists. “It's good fun and personally enriching to get out and find out about the next generation.”
