Breakers call in American as cover

BASKETBALL: The New Zealand Breakers are set to unveil their latest import, just in time for a crucial stretch of their NBL season.

Paul Carter, 29, will become the fourth import to join the injury-plagued Breakers this season, with the American forward on board to cover for the loss of Corey Webster and Tom Abercrombie.

Carter is well-travelled, having played in Cyprus, Mexico, Finland, France and Germany since the conclusion of his college career in 2011. He has also played in the NBA D-League and suited up for the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA Summer League in 2012.

He most recently took the court in Germany for ALBA Berlin, but averaged just nine minutes per game on a side led by former NBA player Peyton Siva.

The club has stated the goal of having its new import on board for Friday night's clash with the Sydney Kings, a game that leads into a busy January as Paul Henare's side tries to jump back into the NBL play-off race.

Meanwhile, Melbourne United is back in the NBL top four after a dominant display over the Brisbane Bullets on Boxing Day.

Down by six points early in the second quarter, United rallied to run out easy 97-59 winners.

Brisbane next plays a Queensland derby at home against the Cairns Taipans on New Year's Eve.
