WHEN a truck carting ammonium nitrate crashed off Angellala Bridge on the Mitchell Hwy at Wyandra, it caused an explosion that rocked the region.

The 2014 critical incident drew in all emergency responders - some who were injured - including the Charleville SES group.

The orange army volunteers took care of duties on the fringes by way of traffic control, communications support and the forensic search of the site.

But the SES responders weren't content to sit on the sidelines, instead requesting to assist the Explosives Directorate with a search of the blast area for debris from the truck which had been torn apart in the incident.

The group members bagged and tagged each paintakingly located piece of evidence to help investigators at the scene - an area which extended more than 1km from the original blast site.

Working alongside the explosives experts, the Charleville SES group battled inclement weather and volatile chemicals.

The members executed their duties with diligence and professionalism, and were instrumental in aiding investigators to develop procedures to ensure the explosion and events of that type were never repeated.

To that end, the Charleville SES group was last night named the Regional Operational Response of the Year winner.
