Bridgwood 'ecstatic' with silver

CYCLING: Overwhelming is probably the best way to describe Kyle Bridgwood's emotions after winning silver at the Paralympics.

The Sunshine Coast-based rider won the medal in the 3000m C4 individual pursuit.

"I'm ecstatic," he said. "The atmosphere was awesome. It's just great to be here."

Bridgwood said the medal signified a lot of hard work.

"It's awesome, it's really just cool," he said.

Bridgwood knew his Slovakian opponent would be fast, and so it proved.

"I knew (Jozef) Metelka was going to go out really, really quick, and he is quick, so I had to just lift from what I did in qualifier and just try to hang on," he said.

Bridgwood stuck with the gold medallist at the start of the race but eventually he was caught, which automatically means the race is over.

"He went pretty quick," he laughed.

Asked how he would go about catching his opponent next time, the answer was surprisingly simple: harder training, and more of it.

The Paralympics are not over for Bridgwood, who hits the road for the time trial and road race later this week.

"I'll probably have to do a bit more training and just keep the body ticking over, that's really all you can do. You can't go too hard now," he said.

Bridgwood was hit by a car while cycling in 2011, which left him a brain injury that affects his co-ordination and motor control.

He said he never thought he would be at a Paralympics.

"I only started track two years ago so it's pretty awesome to get the silver," he said.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics is very much on Bridgwood's mind now.
