Britain wins London Games' first gold

BRITISH rowers Helen Glover and Heather Stanning have won the women's pair to give the host nation its first gold medal of the London Olympics.

The win by clear water in front of 25,000 screaming fans was also the first Olympic gold medal to be won by a British women's crew.

Australia's pairing of Kate Hornsey and Sarah Tait came back from fourth after 500 metres to win the silver medal.

New Zealand won the bronze.
