Broncos fight back to shoot down Cowboys in close encounter
THE Queensland derby between Brisbane and North Queensland went to script in front of 42,303 boisterous fans at Suncorp Stadium last night before the Broncos snatched a thrilling 16-12 win in the dying minutes.
When the Cowboys hit the lead through a Johnathan Thurston penalty goal in the 53rd minute, another nail-biting finish was on the cards.
But just when the Cowboys seemed like they would hang for a perfect 2-0 start to the season, Brisbane's right side attack clicked, halfback Ben Hunt putting centre Dale Copley into the clear before hooker Andrew McCullough raced over to put Brisbane back in front 16-12.
Thurston went within centimetres of scoring with 40 seconds remaining but time ran out for the Cowboys.
In the earlier clash at Bluetongue Stadium on the central coast, Manly, playing without the Stewart brothers, snatched a 14-12 upset over South Sydney courtesy of a late penalty goal by captain Jamie Lyon.
Manly led 6-4 at half time with the clash locked up at 12-all after South Sydney centre Beau Champion crossed for the Rabbits, second try with 10 minutes to go.
