OPINION: Broncos keep on surprising

IF you'd told me after 17 rounds that the Broncos would be two points clear atop the NRL Premiership ladder I would've told you to call it a night and head home.

Every time I've looked at that Broncos squad this year it hasn't once leapt out at me as a premiership contender, let alone potential winner.

Sure there is some quality there, and a few undoubted stars, but looking at the outside backs, Hodges and Boyd aside, nobody really strikes me as a game breaker.

The same can be said for the Broncos across the park- even in the halves.

While Hunt is undoubtedly enjoying his best years in rugby league of late and Anthony Milford is developing into that superstar many had him pinned as, I'm still not sold on them.

Up front, Thaiday and Parker are both proven warriors and Andrew McCullough is one of most underrated hookers around but that's about as far as it would go for me.

Adam Blair is overrated, and to be honest the rest of the pack don't do much to excite me either- but somehow it's working.

Looking at other contenders, I'd have to say the Cowboys and the Roosters are far and away two of the best line-ups in the competition, and to my mind, loom as far stronger chances than the men from Brisbane- even the Warriors look more threatening to me.

But time and again this year the Broncos have continued to silence doubters and prove they are a cohesive unit, capable of both grinding games out and turning on the flair.

I've got a bad feeling this is more than a lucky streak.
