New $50m mining venture for port

A MULTI-MILLION-dollar facility will be built at the Port of Mackay, heralding a new import-export era for the precinct.

Deputy Premier Andrew Fraser announced yesterday Nepean Mining would construct a $50 million mining equipment manufacturing plant at the port to provide a range of new equipment for coal mining operations.

The operation will create 400 full-time jobs and further cement Mackay as an industry hub.

There is no fixed start date, however, North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) deputy chief executive officer Jeff Stewart-Harris and Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin both said construction was earmarked for early this year and would be completed by the end of 2012.

"This is exactly the type of investment the Port of Mackay is prepared for," Mr Stewart-Harris said.

Mr Mulherin said it was a great show of confidence that the Australian-owned company (Nepean) chose Mackay.

The plant will produce above-ground conveyors and in-pit crushing and conveying systems.

It will house a manufacturing line to manufacture conveyors, transfer stations and other specialist mining related infrastructure.

The new site will include a significant research and development division focused on developing new mining technologies, and will be engaged in mine training and safety programs.

The total site space is about 5.8 hectares.

The commercial entrance will be off Ron Searle Dr, while the tradie's entrance will be off Cone St.

Nepean Mining's decision to build in Mackay stemmed from idle coffee chit chat with Mr Stewart-Harris.

Trade and Investment Queensland clinched the deal by arranging site visits and meetings.
