Businesses brace for Friday flop

QUEENSLAND businesses are bracing for a drop in productivity next Friday with many employees expected to skip work because of an Australia Day hangover.

The Australia Day public holiday falls on Thursday this year, meaning employees are required to return to work for one day on Friday before the weekend begins.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland president David Goodwin said small businesses, already struggling in the wake of the global economic downturn, would be most effected with parents having to cover for the shortfall in staff due to absenteeism or holidays.

Warning employees against taking a sickie, Mr Goodwin said he expected employees would do the right thing by their employer and honour commitments.

"You will see a high level of absenteeism but you will have seen that a lot of people will have done the right thing and actually pre-booked annual leave for that day so they can turn it into a four-day weekend," he said.
