WATCH: Boat catches fire at Kinchant Dam on the weekend

HOLIDAY makers watched in horror, when a ski boat caught alight and drifted across Kinchant Dam.

Onlooker Tony Moss said it only took a matter of minutes before the boat went up in flames, after being brought to shore and disembarked.

The incident happened about 9.30am on Saturday.

Mr Moss believed the vessel had a full tank of fuel.

"I could smell something burning and when I looked over the smoke was billowing out," he said.

"I was worried it was going to explode.

"What had happened was (when it was brought back to shore) it just started to burn and was let loose from there.

"It was not anchored and just floated away from everyone while on fire… It went towards the west of the lake."

It burnt for about 45 minutes, Mr Moss said.

"We just watched. Everyone watched and then it just sunk," he said.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said crews, who attended the scene, were unable to access the boat after drifting to the centre of the dam.

That afternoon, firefighters then responded to a wooden fence on fire at Armstrong Beach.

The QFES spokesman said a rural firefighter saw the residential incident at 4pm and extinguished the fire with a garden hose.

"The resident of the address does not know how it started," the spokesman said.

From April 1, Queensland firefighters are set to conduct mitigation activities and engage with local landholders to assist them with reducing the risk of fires in controlled burns and around the property, to prepare for the bushfire season later on this year.
