AUSTRALIAN consumers are being asked to buy local instead of imported products to prevent people losing their jobs.
The Australian Made, Australian Grown television advertising campaign links consumer choices at the retail till with protecting Australian jobs.
AMAG chief executive Ian Harrison said there was a "direct correlation" between purchasing behaviour and employment and local economic development.
"When you buy Aussie-made and grown products, you can be sure there are Aussie jobs behind them," he said.
Four advertisements were made, featuring people at Australian factories and canneries, saying: "You can buy one of our great Australian products, or you can buy an imported product and put us out of a job."
Mr Harrison said decades of domestic growth made it too easy to "disconnect from our responsibility to keep job and career opportunities available for all Australians".
"It comes down to all of us as consumers - the people and businesses that buy things every day - to consciously purchase Australian-made and grown products," he said.
