Cadbury’s family block cuts leave bitter taste

CADBURY'S announcement to reduce the size of the family chocolate block without reducing the price has left a bitter taste in the mouths of chocolate lovers.

A Cadbury spokesman said the company had to reduce the family block from 220 grams to 200 grams due to increased manufacturing costs.

"We've reached a point where we can no longer absorb these increasing costs into the price of our chocolate blocks.

"So we had to make a tough decision to increase the recommended price of Cadbury family blocks or decrease the size?

"We chose to keep Cadbury chocolate affordable for families across Australia and reduce our family blocks by one row," the spokesman said.

It is common practice in the grocery sector to reduce the size of a product as consumers are less likely to notice a size change than a price increase.

This is not the first time the classic block has been reduced in size.

In 2009, Cadbury reduced the size from 250 grams to 200 grams before increasing it to 220 grams in 2013 after customer complaints.

Mum-of-three Danielle Newman said she was outraged at the change.

"My family are chocolate lovers and I think it is ridiculous that they would take a whole row of chocolate out and not reduce the price at all," Ms Newman said.

"When I go grocery shopping, I will generally buy a block or two of Cadbury chocolate, but now I think I will just get my chocolate from Aldi.

"You can get a big block of chocolate from Aldi for $1 and they have heaps of different flavours.

"I have a growing family and will spend my money where I think I am getting the most value.

"I think it is all about making increasing their profits.

"Cadbury knows they are a household name and that most people will just buy it anyway even if they are annoyed with the reduction in size," she said.
