EMBATTLED Republican Herman Cain has suspended his campaign for the US presidency following allegations of an affair and several sexual harassment claims.

He was once considered a frontrunner for his party's nomination but the Georgia businessman's poll ratings have dived, with Republican primary voters deserting him - women in particular.

He met with donors before arriving at his Atlanta headquarters hand-in-hand with his wife, Gloria Cain.

"I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt caused on me and my family," he told supporters.

The dramatic announcement effectively ends a campaign that took Mr Cain, a former pizza executive who rose from humble origins, to the front ranks of a Republican field despite his lack of political experience.
