Calendar shoot turns up the heat

FIREFIGHTERS Michael Fry and Jo Ward battle fires for a living, but it was posing for a smoking hot calendar that proved a bit scarier for the pair.

However, the Mackay firies were happy to expose a bit of flesh and strike a pose for the Firefighters 2012 male and female calendars, which both raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Burns Unit.

It was Ms Ward’s first appearance in the sizzling calendar and she battled a few nerves during the photo shoot at the Gold Coast.

“I only had five days notice for the shoot,” the Habana firefighter said.

“I was very nervous – I had never done anything like it.”

Mr Fry, a Mackay aviation firefighter, overcame his fears at last year’s shoot and ended up enjoying it so much that he put up his hand to make an appearance in the 2012 calendar.

“Last year I was a bit nervous as I had never done anything like that before,” he said.

“(But) it’s for a great cause, with the money going to the burns unit, and its great fun as well.”

Last year Mr Fry raised more than $20,000 from calendar sales and is hoping to match that figure this year.

He said there would be a bit of competition this time around as Ms Ward would also be out in Mackay selling copies of the female version.

However, Ms Ward, who is aiming to sell 1000 copies, thinks Mr Fry could have her covered.

“There’s a larger female base who like the (male) calendar and that’s been going for years,” she said.

Sales from the annual Queensland calendar have raised more than $650,000 for the burns unit.

The calendars cost $10 each and can be bought from Coffee Club outlets.

Mr Fry and Ms Ward will also be selling the calendars at Caneland Central on Saturdays until Christmas.
