Camping plans for Australia Day weekend at Byfield wash away

A NUMBER of sites at Byfield National Park and State Forest north of Yeppoon are likely to be closed on the Australia Day long weekend due to flooded creeks and the forecast heavy rain over the next few days.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Principal Ranger Capricornia Peter Moore said the local catchment has been saturated by rain over the past few days and further rain would cut access across Waterpark Creek for some time.

"Campers should check with QPWS before going to the area," Mr Moore said.

"Waterpark Creek has already flooded and cut the road through the park, restricting access to the Byfield coastal areas."

Mr Moore said access to the following campsites was likely to be affected well into the coming long weekend:

  • Waterpark Creek Campsite - Byfield State Forest
  • Five Rocks Campsite - Stockyard Point Headland
  • Mytellea Campsite - Nine Mile Beach
  • Melaleuca Campsite - Nine Mile Beach
  • Pandanus Campsite - Nine Mile Beach
  • Casuarina Campsite - Nine Mile Beach

"Upper Stony and Red Rock day-use areas and campgrounds are open at this stage," Mr Moore said.

"Rangers have informed existing campers of the forecast heavy rain and to be careful not to get stranded, and the campers have now left the area.

"A park alert is on our website, www.nprsr.qld.gov.au."

Mr Moore said staff would continue to monitor creek levels and the rain forecasts. Campers with bookings for this weekend were being contacted today.

"To help you make decisions about your trip, please check the current weather forecast and flood warnings. For the latest park information check Park Alerts at www.nprsr.qld.gov.au.

"For safety reasons we are asking all residents and visitors to be patient and respect all closure notices and warnings," Mr Moore said.

"If you get into trouble in the area and need help, contact Queensland Police on 000 or SES on 132500."
