Candidate: I will take on the Govt

FORMER Golden Triangle spokesman Jim Pearce has committed to supporting farmers on the floor of State Parliament if he is elected as the member for Mirani at the 2012 state election.

Mr Pearce said he was prepared to take on the Government over its decision to approve mining on land that clearly meets Strategic Cropping Land criteria.

"I will seek advice and support on the introduction of a private members bill to amend legislation that allows Bandanna Energy to develop a mine on or under lands that meet the SCL criteria," Mr Pearce said.

"The decision by Government to approve the development of the Springsure Creek Mine, under special circumstances, was wrong."

He said the Government was warned on several occasions before the announcement on May 31 this year.

"We knew that Bandanna Energy had injected millions of dollars exploring and proving up the resource as well as promoting the potential of the mine to overseas investors," Mr Pearce said.

"From my experience around George St in Brisbane, I feel that Bandanna has outsmarted the Government by continuing to invest dollars in the projects - and has then threatened legal action if the project was denied."
