Canoeist takes honours at first AIS awards night

SLALOM canoe world champion Jessica Fox has been named athlete of the year at the inaugural AIS Sport Performance awards.

Fox became the first slalom canoe competitor to win the C1 and K1 world championships in 2014, two years after she won a silver medal in the K1 at the London Olympics.

The 20-year-old's parents, Richard and Miriam, were both Olympic canoeists, with Miriam winning a bronze medal for France at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

The other big winners were wheelchair athlete Kurt Fearnley and NRL premier South Sydney.

In categories voted for by the public, Fearnley took out the sports personality of the year award, while the Rabbitohs won performance of the year after claiming their first NRL premiership since 1971. Fearnley had another outstanding 2014, finishing second in the Chicago Marathon and winning the New York Marathon.
