Capricorn squad claws Young back

EMERALD netballer Anna Young and Blackwater’s Kahlee Saunders have been selected in the Capricorn Claws open netball squad to contest this year’s Tier 2 statewide competition.

Young, a member of last year’s Claws side, has returned to Emerald this year, but started her netball career in Emerald as a junior.

Saunders is also a former Emerald player.

Former Blackwater player Mel Clarke and former Emerald player Tracy Upton, now both from Rockhampton, have also returned to the squad.

Gladstone netballer Poppy Larson is one of the new faces in a strong 14-player line-up.

Rockhampton’s Shanita Smith (centre court), Claudia Jones (shooter) and Rebecca Settree (defence) are the other new faces in this year’s squad.

Returning to this year’s squad are centre court players Lizzy Egerton, who hails from Barcaldine, but attends university in Rockhampton, and Carmen Anderson (Rockhampton) along with shooters Jacinta James and Amanda Goody (Rockhampton) and defenders Keanna Hopkins and Moana Waasdorp (Rockhampton).

Selectors are still searching for another specialist circle defender to join this year’s squad.

Rockhampton’s Barb Ahmat again returns as coach this year.

The squad was selected after two gruelling trials in Rockhampton over the past two months.

Brisbane hosts the opening round on May 8-9 before Cairns hosts round 2 on May 29-30 and the final round returns to Brisbane on June 26-27.
