Car chase charges – man on bail for rehab

THE learner driver who was stopped when police activated road spikes at Alstonville following a pursuit in an allegedly stolen car last Thursday will be allowed out on bail to attend drug rehabilitation.

Lincoln Gander appeared at Lismore Court yesterday on six charges including obtaining property by deception, police pursuit, not displaying L plates and being carried in a conveyance without consent.

The court heard Gander was driving a Holden during last Thursday's police pursuit. The car had been stolen from Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.

The court heard he was asleep in the back of an allegedly stolen Subaru involved in a pursuit on Friday near Kyogle.

It was alleged Rebecca Gordon and another adult and a 16-year-old girl were all in the Holden when road spikes stopped it near the Wardell Rd overpass on Thursday.

When applying for bail, Gander's solicitor Amy Barker told the court the 19-year-old had drug problems and expressed a desire to go to rehabilitation.

"He has been using a significant amount of cannabis since the age of 12 and he has been using ice for the past few months," Ms Barker said.

She argued her client should receive bail as he was vulnerable if kept in custody.

Magistrate David Heilpern told Gander he would usually send people to jail for the offences he allegedly committed.

"People who live in this area deserve not to have their lives put at risk by people who are high on ice, driving at 100kmh on suburban streets," he said.

Mr Heilpern ordered Gander held in custody and to be bailed to rehab when a place became available and adjourned his matters until October 20.

The 16-year-old girl was placed on an 18-month bond.
