UPDATE: Bystanders have been left shaken after an elderly man drove his car onto the footpath, slamming into a pole outside a Palmerin St cafe.

Police believe the 75-year-old was attempting to reverse from a park outside Bryson's Cafe when he hit drive and accelerated.

The driver hit another car, coming to rest on the path just metres from outdoor tables.   The crash happened just after the lunch rush at around 2pm.

While Bryson's Cafe owner Lynn Bryson didn't see the crash, she said she was grateful no one was hurt.   "Luckily there was no one sitting out the front or walking past," Mrs Bryson said.

"The elderly gentleman was fine - his family came up and picked him."

The man was not injured in the crash and he was treated at the scene by paramedics.   Warwick police Sergeant Lisa Self said crews were reviewing CCTV footage.

"It looks like he meant to go from a park position into reverse but accelerated onto the path," she said.

"Crews are continuing their investigations."

No action has been taken against the driver at this stage.
