Land Rover catches fire on Hervey Bay-Maryborough Rd

A MAN had a lucky escape after his Land Rover Discovery four-wheel drive caught fire along Hervey Bay-Maryborough Rd at Susan River just before 2pm on Thursday.

Torquay Fire Station's Station officer John Pappas said the man had noticed smoke coming from the bonnet before he pulled over.

Police closed the Hervey Bay-Maryborough Rd in both directions while the fire was extinguished.

The incident saw traffic backed up in the area for about 1km in both directions.

The car was completely gutted by fire and a shell was left sitting on the side of the road.

The man was seen sitting on the side of the road with the few possessions he managed to rescue, including a child seat.

"The car has had mechanical difficulties in the past few days and I suspect that may have been the cause," Mr Pappas said.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the flames.

Mr Pappas said the fire was a timely reminder to motorists.

"It's a reminder to people to make sure the cooling systems of their cars have been serviced," he said.
