Teacher on student sex charge

A FEMALE teacher from a Darling Downs high school has been charged with having sex with a 15-year-old male student.

The 29-year-old woman, who cannot be named unless committed to stand trial on the matter, has been charged with one count of unlawful carnal knowledge of a child under 16 years of age.

She was not present when her matters were mentioned in Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday, but was represented by solicitor Luke Osborne who told the court he was acting as town agent for the woman’s Brisbane-based solicitors Macrossans Lawyers.

No details of the alleged liaison between teacher and student were aired in court yesterday, but Detective Sergeant Darren Lees of the Toowoomba Child Protection Investigation Unit confirmed the charge arose from allegations made earlier this year.

It is believed the complaint was instigated by the complainant boy’s parents.

Under Queensland law, the school involved cannot be publicly identified.

An Education Queensland spokesman could not tell The Chronicle yesterday if the woman at the centre of the allegations was still working as a teacher.

Mr Osborne said he was instructed to seek a committal mention date which would prompt the compilation of a full brief of evidence on the matter from police.

Magistrate Bruce Schemioneck said he would adjourn proceedings for eight weeks to give police time to complete the brief of evidence which would then be forwarded to the woman’s solicitors.

Mr Schemioneck enlarged the woman’s bail and adjourned the matter for committal mention back in the same court on November 30.
