Cashed-up giants aiming to lure Popovic

SHANGHAI Shenhua is preparing to make another play to sign Western Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Brisbane Roar's defeat of Carlos Tevez's Chinese club in an Asian Champions League qualifier has put more pressure on manager Gus Poyet.

Now Shanghai is reportedly set to make a bid to lure its No.1 target, Popovic, to the club in a deal that would smash the $4.5 million offer he turned down in November.

The club has reportedly already made an informal approach to the Wanderers coach's representatives in recent days in a move that could be worth up to $7 million, including bonuses.

In Shenhua's first offer to Popovic, it refused to relinquish control over the recruitment of players, staff and operations of the football department.

However, a mega-money offer to the Western Sydney manager could prove too lucrative to knock back.

Popovic led the Wanderers to Asian Champions League glory in 2014 but has only recorded four wins from 18 games in the A-League this season.
