Catwalk queen takes to village life
YOU would be forgiven for thinking fashion designer Katie Gannon was stuck in a time warp.
The woman behind the label Mother Maria (a dedication to her late polish grandmother Maria Duchnicz) has been inspired by vintage looks for as long as she can remember.
Her designs grace the catwalks of Australia, but Katie now enjoys a more relaxed approach to fashion and has just celebrated one year of working from her studio in sleepy Palmwoods.
"I had been to Palmwoods and remembered how cute the town was so I came to have a look and fell in love with an old shopfront for lease. It had so much character and was actually the original grocers in Palmwoods," she said.
To mark the one-year occasion, Katie will be rebranding her store.
"I am about to rebrand and separate the label from the shop itself," Katie said.
"I took my signs down last week and will rebrand with my new shop name, Cotton & Clouds.
"I came up with this name because I use a lot of organic cotton in my clothing range and because the shop is located at the base of the hinterland, in among the clouds.
"The hinterland suits what I do perfectly. People who live around here appreciate the clothing more and the fact that it is all made locally from organic fabrics. A lot of my customers are eco conscious," Katie said.
"My style is evolving as well and I am moving away from catwalk and into clothing that people can feel comfortable in and wear every day."
Cotton & Clouds will also stock a collection of "quirky" vintage wear.
