RARE footage of a pair of eastern brown snakes mating has been captured on the Sunshine Coast, along with the snakes "caught in the act".

Snake Catcher Lockie Gilding said catching brown snakes during intimate moments was a rare treat.

"Mating behaviour among brown snakes is not often observed in the wild (let alone filmed) which makes these relocations really quite exciting for the team (not so much for the home owners)," he wrote on the Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 Facebook page.

The amorous pair was found snuggled up in deep leaf litter just outside a Sunshine Coast home.

"We very rarely ever see two brown snakes mating; every now and again you see combat between two males," Mr Gilding said.

He said brown snakes preferred a bit of privacy when getting to know each other.

"They're hiding deep in leaf litter ... all we can see is a tiny little section of their bodies," he said.

Aside from the excitement of witnessing a natural phenomenon rarely seen, there was another advantage to finding the brown snakes mating.

"Luckily I kind of caught them in the act because they wouldn't have been this calm, they would have heard me coming a lot quicker," Mr Gilding said.

"But because they were mating they were distracted, they weren't paying as much attention as they normally do."

The pair were captured and tucked up together during their relocation before being released into bush land.
