Caulfield Cup goes to Southern Speed

THE Caulfield Cup was a triumph for South Australian training combination Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, with lightly-weighted mare Southern Speed outstaying her rivals after being given the run of the race by Craig Williams.

The trio enjoyed their first success in the 2400-metre race as Southern Speed [$10] finished ahead of Green Moon, with Tullamore third.

"Just sensational," an elated Macdonald said.

''This was the one we really wanted. When you go into a race with a good chance and things work right, it's pretty important.''

The win came with some disappointment for Macdonald, with Southern Speed's owners electing to have Williams ride the mare rather than Macdonald and Gluyas's stable rider Clare Lindop.
