Celebrate Christmas in spectacular style

EUROPE'S most famous Christmas markets always get travellers in the yuletide spirit.

Abercrombie & Kent has sorted through some of the best, so that you don't miss out on sipping on the finest Glühwein, savouring roasted chestnuts with fingers crossed for a light dusting of snow, or finding a quirky present for someone special.

In Budapest, the Christmas market is laid out in front of the city's famous Advent Calendar building. Each day, a decorated window of the building is opened to mark the countdown to Christmas.

Vienna's Christkindlmarkt on the square in front of the Town Hall is the best known and dates back more than 700 years. A purpose-built ice rink appears each winter where skating against a backdrop of twinkling Christmas lights is one of the most beautiful experiences you'll ever have.

The Spittelberg market in Vienna winds its way through narrow cobble-stoned streets, alleyways and courtyards. It is dedicated to an eclectic and extensive collection of arts and crafts.

The Schönbrunn Palace has its own little Christmas market and is a magnificent setting for this romantic Advent village.

Salzburg's Christkindlmarkt is situated close to Salzburg Cathedral and Residenz Palace.

Berlin has more than 50 Christmas markets, some of which are magical and traditional where others are more lively.

In Prague, the Old Town Square plays host to a festive market of brightly decorated wooden huts, selling Czech handicrafts, hot food and warm drinks. At 5pm every night, the beautiful lights of the Christmas tree are turned on.

The beautifully decorated shop windows on Munich's Maximilianstrasse are not to be missed and the Marienplatz Christmas market is the city's oldest.

The Piazza Navona in Rome, home to the spectacular Fountain of the Moor and the Fountain of Neptune, is where the city's biggest and most traditional Christmas Market takes place.

A&K's 10-day Berlin, Prague and Munich Christmas market tour is valid for travel from December 1-22 this year with prices from $8765 per person. The journey includes accommodation at the Rocco Forte Collection of hotels.
